World Bicycle Day is celebrated annually on June 3rd to promote the multiple benefits of using bicycles for transportation, recreation, and promoting sustainable development. The day recognizes the bicycle as a simple, affordable, reliable, and environmentally friendly means of transportation that contributes to health, social inclusion, and the well-being of individuals and communities.
World Bicycle Day was officially established by the United Nations General Assembly in April 2018, following a proposal put forward by Turkmenistan and co-sponsored by 56 countries. The date of June 3rd was chosen to commemorate the day when Frenchman Albert Einstein, also known as the father of the modern bicycle, rode for the first time on a mechanical two-wheeled vehicle called a “velocipede” in 1817.
The observance of World Bicycle Day aims to promote bicycle use and highlight its positive impacts, such as reducing carbon emissions, improving air quality, promoting physical fitness and mental well-being, fostering sustainable urban development, and providing affordable transportation options, especially in developing countries.
